The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) has announced its players of the week for September 1, naming Morrisville State College sophomore Tyler Dunworth (Poestenkill, N.Y.) its Special Teams Player of the Week. Dunworth, a running back and punter for the Mustangs, was selected after controlling field position for the Mustangs during the season opening 9-7 defeat to Wilkes University.
The SUNY Canton women’s soccer team scored their first goal of the season just 1:19 into the opening half and never looked back as they rolled over Morrisville State College 6-0 in the first round of the Canton Tournament on Saturday. The Roos (1-0) dominated the game from the opening whistle keeping the ball in the offensive end for most of the 90 minutes.  SUNY Canton outshot the Mustangs 19-2 and sophomore Laura Pratt (Binghamton, N.Y.) and freshman Megan Evans (Potsdam, N.Y.) combined for two saves in the shutout victory.
After playing a scoreless game for most of the first half, SUNY Potsdam men’s soccer scored twice late in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. Potsdam would score again early in the second half before Morrisville State fought back with two of their own goals. Unfortunately, the Mustangs surge came up short as they fell to Potsdam 3-2 in the first round of the Potsdam College Cup.
Sophomore Amanda Hunt (Tunkhannock, P.A.) and senior Austin Townsley (Horseheads, N.Y.) were top finishers for the Morrisville State College women’s and men’s cross country teams at the SUNY IT Wildcat Cross Country Invitational, Saturday in Utica.
Morrisville State College opened its 2012 season Saturday, posting a heartbreaking 9-7 loss to visiting Wilkes University in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) – New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) showdown on Drake Field in Morrisville.
Host Ithaca College scored four times in each half to top visiting Morrisville State College field hockey by a final 8-1 Saturday afternoon in the season opener for the Mustangs. Morrisville State’s lone goal was scored late in the second half by senior forward Rebecca Meyer (Morrisville, N.Y.). Julia Conroy led the Bombers with three goals while teammate Amber Foose added two more scores.
The Morrisville State College women’s volleyball team opened the 2012 season with two losses Saturday afternoon, falling by match scores of 3-0 to both Hilbert College and D’Youville College in the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) – North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Challenge held at D’Youville. In the first of the day, Hilbert claimed the win with set scores of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-13 over the Mustangs. Allegra Johnson led Hilbert with 10 kills and six digs, while teammate Shannon Memminger registered 22 assists and six service aces.
Morrisville State College is ready to show college searching students just what they are all about, as it hosts open houses on Oct. 20 and Nov. 10 in the Automotive Technology Building. There will be numerous activities planned throughout the day to help students find out more about MSC, along with advisement in the college search process. The open house sessions run from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. These sessions allow students to see the campus, meet with deans, faculty and staff, learn about bachelor and associate degree programs and tour the college's academic facilities.
The Morrisville State College volleyball program is looking forward to moving in a new direction in 2012, under guidance of new head coach Fred Wallace. Early on, the squad has been hard at work becoming familiar with newcomers to the team this season, as well as new systems that are being put into place. With a solid group returning to the roster, Wallace believes that the newcomers will also have a real shot at seeing time on the court.
The Morrisville State College men’s soccer is itching for the season to get underway and is prepared to hit the ground running as they open the 2012 schedule on the road at the SUNY Potsdam College Cup tournament Saturday, September 1. Morrisville State is looking to improve upon its .500 mark recorded last season, returning 10 solid players and adding 15 talented newcomers.
