After playing a scoreless game for most of the first half, SUNY Potsdam men’s soccer scored twice late in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. Potsdam would score again early in the second half before Morrisville State fought back with two of their own goals. Unfortunately, the Mustangs surge came up short as they fell to Potsdam 3-2 in the first round of the Potsdam College Cup.
Eduardo Figueroa (Rochester, N.Y.) put the Bears on the board first at 36:12 when he scored off a pass from Steven Sepowski (Castleton, N.Y.). Just over five minutes later a Morrisville State defender, attempting to clear the ball, knocked it in for an own goal giving Potsdam a 2-0 lead.
Tom Benedetto (Queensbury, N.Y.) rounded off the scoring for the Bears at 49:03 when he tipped in a shot from Chris Chiarella (Rochester, N.Y.).
Gilroy Alvarez (Guatemala) and Joey Plummer (Gates, N.Y.) recorded the goals for the Mustangs with Jeffrey Hado (Tema, Ghana) and Alvarez tallying the assists at 59:14 and 65:21, respectively. Despite outshooting Potsdam 23 to 16, Morrisville State’s rally came up short.
Rob Larkin (Clinton, N.Y.) recorded the loss for the Mustangs, making five saves in 90 minutes of play.
Jake Gyder (Liverpool, N.Y.) tallied the win for the Bears, recording five saves.
Morrisville State is back in action tomorrow against Hilbert College for the final round of the Potsdam College Cup.
