Talon Abrams has been fascinated with amphibians and reptiles since he was 4 years old, catching snakes and frogs in a backyard creek at his Madison, New York, home. Some even made their way into his bedroom so he could examine them more closely in a glass bowl. That allure eventually led him to SUNY Morrisville to pursue a bachelor’s degree in renewable resources technology. He wants to land in a career where he can help aquatic life, animals and the environment.

Five years ago, Elizabeth Hope Noble ’16 was finishing high school and serving as valedictorian of her senior class. The self-described "small-town girl'' was ready for college and thinking about life beyond it. She knew she wanted to work in a field where she could have a positive impact on people and she knew she wanted to see more of the world.

Tossing a lacrosse ball back and forth was a big part of Louie ’15 and Nick Geswaldo’s childhood. While others were playing video games, the brothers were shooting and catching, from dawn to dusk, in the backyard of their LaFayette, New York, home.   As they got older, their love for lacrosse deepened their brotherly camaraderie and spread to a college community.

Long days on the farm, grit and determination have come to define dairy management student Carrie Shuman on her journey to graduation. Born and raised on a former dairy farm in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, Shuman amassed emotional and financial hardship following the death of her father during high school and the recent loss of her brother.

This semester has been anything but ordinary for SUNY Morrisville student Emilee Niejadlik.  Through an internship as an aquarium fellow at the world-class Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC), she interacted with octopuses, helped heal a wolf eel, and saw firsthand the magnificence of a sunflower sea star, the largest many-rayed sea star in the world. 

MORRISVILLE, NY—SUNY Morrisville graduates celebrated commencement day with family and friends amid a stage adorned with ferns and flowers grown and arranged by students in the college’s horticulture program. Noteworthy about this year’s graduates is the first cohort of nursing bachelor’s degree students.

MORRISVILLE, NY—He worked with different wind turbine towers and took a tower climbing and rescue class. Last week, SUNY Morrisville student Dylan Mathew added wind turbine maintenance to his skill set. The Long Island native’s goal is to learn all he can through the college’s renewable energy bachelor’s degree program and to sign up for every opportunity offered to him. “I never know what I will be doing in the future, so I try to learn as much as possible,” he said.  

MORRISVILLE, NY—Faculty, staff and students are gearing up for two agricultural and dairy events this weekend: the sixth annual Milk Run on Friday, May 3, and Dairy Showmanship on Saturday, May 4. The Milk Run is a family-friendly, five-kilometer run, walk or crawl open to all skill levels. A one-mile fun run begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the 5K run beginning at 6 p.m. in front of Marshall Hall. The Milk Run is part of the Route 20 Road Race Challenge.

MORRISVILLE, NY—SUNY Morrisville students Zainab Jimoh, of Staten Island, and Layne Martin, of Cazenovia, have been honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is from noon-4 p.m. at the SUNY Morrisville Arnold R. Fisher Dairy Complex, located off of Eaton Street.  

MORRISVILLE, NY— Gilligan’s Ice Cream loves its fans so much, they are letting them choose a new SUNY Morrisville indulgence through a Mustang Ice Cream Contest.  SUNY Morrisville alumni Andy Lagoe ’92 and Gil Hodges ’92 along with partner Mike Lagoe, owners of Gilligan’s Ice Cream, (www.gilliganssherburne.com), located in Sherburne, devised the contest, which lauds their Mustang pride.

NORWICH, NY—The SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus and Human Services Institute will present a community forum on the opioid crisis Thursday, March 28, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. in the community room, #132A & B of Follett Hall on the Norwich Campus. Light refreshments will be served at 1 p.m.

MORRISVILLE, NY—Winter’s harsh elements don’t stop SUNY Morrisville’s woods sports team.   Behind the college’s aquaculture center, amid frigid temperatures, snow and ice, they shovel snow off of the practice field and swing axes and fire up chainsaws until dark.

MORRISVILLE, NY—The newest member of the New York State University Police at SUNY Morrisville is headed to the police academy. For the next 20 weeks, Bruin, a year-old black German Shepherd, and his new partner, New York State University Police Officer Nicole Wright, will undergo intense training at the New York State Police Canine Training Facility in Cooperstown.

MORRISVILLE, NY—After helping bring joy to children in need of care, the SUNY Morrisville Campus Activities Board (CAB) was recently honored with the 2018 Northeast Community Service Event of the Year award by the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA).

Beyond a tattoo on her left forearm, nursing student Shana Prosser doesn’t advertise her military service. She spends her days in class or clocking in clinical hours at the hospital, then returns home to her husband and two children in rural Chenango County.

Dual-sport student-athlete Jordan Anderson turns competitive fire into a career A chance attendance of a lacrosse game changed the course of Jordan Anderson’s life. Anderson ’17 had just wrapped up a very successful freshman year on the Mustang women’s basketball team, earning Rookie of the Year status in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) for her performance as the team’s starting point guard.

Sibell pops her head over the stall door, flattens her nose and pins back her ears. If horses could hand out grades, right now her rider would be receiving a C-minus in treats. Message received. Marcus Livermore, the mare’s obedient servant, rummages through the brushes, combs and hoof picks in his grooming kit and fishes out a peppermint. Sibell nickers at the sound of crumpling candy wrapper.

Mike ’79 and Stephanie Battisti ’79 have lived their lives in tandem since meeting as undergraduate students at SUNY Morrisville in the 1970s. The couple graduated in 1979 and grew their lives together on a maple and dairy farm outside of Morrisville. They shifted gears after their children were grown, starting a new chapter in the Adirondacks.

With love and care, Jerome “Jay” Caretti tends to SUNY Morrisville’s portal to the stars. Painted silver and capped with a domed top resembling a silo, the Observatory stands atop a hill off Skyline Drive, on the east side of campus, overlooking Route 20. It is owned by the college and available to both students and the public.

Jeremy Dupuis ’16 has a knack for breaking things.

From her post as a waterfowl researcher at the Forbes Biological Station in Havana, Illinois, Cheyenne Beach ’16 sees the whole country. She can look east and recall her time as an AmeriCorps volunteer on Chincoteague Island off the coast of Virginia. She can look west to the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge along the Colorado River in Arizona, where she worked with endangered species in the fall of 2016.

As the temperature soared into the mid-90s during this year’s Great New York State Fair, patrons lined up in front of Gilligan’s Ice Cream stand. A large sign touting premium handcrafted hard ice cream enticed fairgoers as they wiped their brows with napkins and fanned themselves to the beat of music emanating from a nearby booth.
