MORRISVILLE, NY—Did you know that the average Holstein dairy cow drinks 25-30 gallons of water per day? Or that cows can smell something up to six miles away?
Learn more about cows, agriculture and SUNY Morrisville’s programs and dairy complex during Spring on the Farm, Saturday, April 27.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is from noon-4 p.m. at the SUNY Morrisville Arnold R. Fisher Dairy Complex, located off of Eaton Street.
“The focus of Spring on the Farm is to get the community to visit our facilities and to learn more about agriculture,” said Ashley Adams, assistant professor of dairy science.
The college’s dairy club and students from all of the areas being promoted—including agricultural science, agricultural business, aquaculture, horticulture and dairy—will be assisting.
An array of booths, including the programs mentioned above, livestock and Nelson Farms (the college’s small-scale food processing incubator), will be featured in the showmanship barn located at the dairy facility. Visitors also can sample food produced right at SUNY Morrisville.
Tours of the milking parlor, cow and calf barns, greenhouse and livestock barn are planned every 30-45 minutes.
Visitors will receive a “passport” to track their progress visiting all of the stops and booths, which can be turned in for a free ice cream.
The college’s herd of approximately 220 milking cows produces 95 pounds of milk per cow per day, some of which is used in its cheese curds.
