In this two-part series, the Honorable Hugh C. Humphreys covers the history of violence against Black Americans from abolition to the Civil Rights Era. His comprehensive study will also explore the Reconstruction era, the forming of the KKK, and lynchings. These stories will illuminate the lives of individuals like Emmett Till and activists such as Schwerner, Chaney, and Goodman. He will then conclude with the Civil and Voting Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965.

Thomas Hogle, Ph.D. takes a deep dive into the history behind the 14th Amendment. Dr. Hogle explores the causes of the Civil War, the crafting of the amendment in the reconstruction era, and the impact that the amendment continues to have to this day. This survey history offers a concise tale of how the question of slavery was fundamental in causing the Civil War and sparking one of the most important amendments to date.

In this presentation, Timothy McLaughlin, Ph.D. details the Golden Isles' rich cultural history and the Black American community that has called it home. For years, the islands have been the home of the Gullah Geechee but recently property and land itself have become a source of conflict. This brief historical introduction sets the stage for discussing the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, the case proceedings, and the prospects for race relations in the Golden Isles.

In this presentation, Victoria Basulto travels to Galveston, Texas to visit sites of historical importance to the Juneteenth celebration. Juneteenth commemorates the day that General Gordon Granger read out General Order No. 3 to the people of Galveston on June 19, 1865. The order proclaimed to the enslaved of Texas that they were now free, months after the end of the Civil War and years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
