SUNY Morrisville is gearing up for the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, inviting students and the community to watch this once-in-a-lifetime experience together.   A tent will be set up in the academic quad (near Charlton Hall) beginning at noon, where free solar eclipse glasses will be given away along with pamphlets about the event and safe viewing information. A limited number of stress relievers, shaped like the galaxy, will also be available.

SUNY Morrisville Professor Christopher Scalzo is making his mark not only in the classroom, but also around the world. His global philanthropy was recently recognized with a President’s Volunteer Service Award from Winrock International. It is the second time he has received the award, a prestigious national honor which lauds international volunteer service.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand secure funding for SUNY Morrisville to purchase three robotic milkers SUNY Morrisville’s dairy program will be getting new equipment that will help put its ag students on the cutting edge in the industry.

A new partnership with Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies and SUNY Morrisville will allow more students to enroll in master’s degree programs at the iSchool. The agreement provides a smooth pathway for SUNY Morrisville undergraduate students to enter residential graduate degree programs at the iSchool to earn masters’ degrees in data science, information sciences and librarianship.  

While most SUNY Morrisville students were packing their bags for spring semester return to campus, Corey Evans was filling a duffle bag heading 3,000 miles in a different direction, on a different mission. The 23-year-old SUNY Morrisville nursing student and Canastota resident flew to Nicaragua for a medical mission, a lifelong calling that impassioned his career helping others.

Angela Petersen started cooking imaginary cuisine on a kitchen playset her mother bought her when she was four years old. She has since traded her plastic pots and pans for real cookery as she pursues her passion in SUNY Morrisville’s culinary arts management program. Classes like culinary restaurant, taught by Associate Professor Anthony Lupino, are flavoring the Bronx resident’s skillset.  

SUNY Morrisville students and staff were among those who ventured to the Capitol to advocate for continued Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) funding and support from state legislators during EOP Advocacy Day. Students met with New York State Sen. Rachel May, Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli, as well as other elected officials, sharing their EOP experiences and expressing the importance of continued funding for the program in the New York State budget.

Preparing a skilled workforce for careers in the emerging offshore wind industry will be part of SUNY Morrisville’s renewable energy plans thanks to a $500,000 grant. The college is among eight SUNY institutions to receive a grant from the Offshore Wind Training Institute (OWTI), nearly $4 million announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul recently, to prepare students for careers in the growing offshore wind industry.

When more than 900 students from various technical schools converged on the SUNY Morrisville campus for the annual Area II SkillsUSA competition, they were greeted by teams of enthusiastic SUNY Morrisville students, faculty and staff ready to assist and share stories about the college’s dynamic programs and facilities.

SUNY Morrisville faculty, staff and students will have a hand in assisting more than 900 participants showcasing their talents and brushing up on their skills during the annual SkillsUSA Area II Regional Conference held at the college Friday, Feb. 9.

Interested in making a game and being part of a global experiment in creativity? SUNY Morrisville is once again serving as a host site for Global Game Jam® (GGJ), the world’s largest game jam event, taking place Friday, Jan. 26-Sunday, Jan. 28. During the worldwide event, participants are given a central theme and just 48 hours to create a video or board/card game.

It was an opportunity for small business enthusiasts to connect, learn and grow. And for SUNY Morrisville, it was a chance to talk about the college’s exciting efforts which are preparing students to launch ventures and contribute to the local economy, including microcredentials and workforce programs, and a new Agribusiness Innovation and Training Center on the horizon.  

A 1997 Mustang Cobra is getting the chance to shine again, thanks to students in Alexander Graf’s auto body technology classes. Gone is the faded paint, replaced with metallic green to make it look like new again. The Cobra is one of the many projects going on in SUNY Morrisville’s auto body technology program under the leadership of Graf, instructional support assistant. 

Rebecca Hargrave, associate professor of environmental science & arboriculture at SUNY Morrisville, has been sharing her innovative teaching techniques and hands-on learning with students for more than a decade. That dedication has gone beyond the classroom and into the community, where she and her students continue to leave their mark. 

The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and The State University of New York (SUNY) joined with SUNY Morrisville and developmental disabilities service provider ACHIEVE today to announce that the college’s direct support microcredential program in the field of developmental disabilities is accepting spring enrollment for this successful program, which will soon graduate 35 students into the field. 

SUNY Morrisville has been recognized as an AmeriCorps School of National Service, making it easier for alumni of the national service program to pursue the applied, hands-on education offered at the college. 

Faculty, staff, student ambassadors and volunteers packed SUNY Morrisville’s new recreation center excitedly answering questions from more than 130 inquisitive prospective students and their families during the college’s Open House on Oct. 21. 

It was a day to learn all things agriculture! And there was plenty to learn about from horses, aquaculture and dairy, to maple syrup and soil science.  Twenty-five booths were part of this year’s Ag Day at SUNY Morrisville, which attracted nearly 500 participants, including students from Hamilton, Madison, Stockbridge Valley and Morrisville-Eaton’s agriculture programs.

While he normally spends his summer traveling for fun, this year was out of the ordinary for SUNY Morrisville Professor Christopher Scalzo. Scalzo, professor of business, spent three weeks as a consultant — sharing his expertise in Kabba, Nigeria, where he worked with a team on a five-year strategic plan at the Kabba College of Agriculture. The college is a division of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, located in West Africa.

SUNY Morrisville has been recognized again for its excellence with numerous listings in the 2024 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, including a jump as a Top Performer on Social Mobility     The annual report ranks colleges and universities nationwide according to their performance on diverse measures of academic quality. Regional universities and regional colleges are divided and ranked in four geographical groups: North, South, Midwest and West.

SUNY Morrisville’s woods sports team is gearing up for a new season and is looking for new members to join them!   Coach Seth Carsten, a former professional woodsman, is seeking veterans and rookies of varying majors and abilities to join the team, which showcases speed and precision with axes, chainsaws and other tools associated with traditional lumberjacking challenges.

SUNY Morrisville welcomed its largest incoming class in years with 950  students. “This has been an incredible year for SUNY Morrisville,” said Caleb McGuire, director of Admissions. “I’ve been honored to work with our Admissions team and faculty and staff across campus to help each of these 950 students find their place at SUNY Morrisville.” 

There was no containing the excitement in Sarah Dickinson’s voice — her lifelong dream of helping horses finally coming true as she checked in as a new student during SUNY Morrisville’s Welcome Weekend events, Aug 24-27.   The 18-year-old SUNY Morrisville student, from Ripley, followed her passion for horses, enrolling in the college’s equine science, equine rehabilitation program. 

SUNY Morrisville’s Norwich Campus has partnered with local organization, ACHIEVE, to help strengthen New York’s direct support professional workforce.   The move follows a recent announcement from SUNY regarding schools partnering with the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) through a direct support microcredential program that will provide training leading to national certification in the field of developmental disabilities.
