The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2012 NAC West Division individual women's lacrosse award winners, naming Morrisville State College freshman attack, Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) the inaugural NAC West Division Rookie of the Year.
Wood played a significant role in Morrisville State's success this season, as they posted a program best 11-4 regular season record, and finished atop the conference with a perfect 9-0 record, earning the overall top seed in the conference championship tournament, in which they claimed the title in a thrilling 11-10 three overtime victory over Keuka on Sunday.
Wood led the West Division in points (86) and was second in goals scored (69), while leading the conference in caused turnovers (31) and finishing in the top 10 in assists recorded (17), ground balls (55) and draw controls (64). She was selected as the division's Student-Athlete of the Week three times this season, twice for offense and once for defense.
Wood posted a collegiate best nine goals and an assist in the 22-10 win over Medaille, and had a collegiate best 11 ground balls and eight draw controls in the loss to Potsdam.
The freshman is a graduate of Holy Names Academy in Albany and is majoring in liberal arts and sciences: humanities and social science at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Michelle and David Wood of Duanesburg.
