Wilson women's hoops tops Morrisville State 60-53

Freshman Vanessa Whitfield (Chambersburg, PA) netted a team high 27 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead visiting Wilson College women's basketball to a 60-53 victory over Morrisville State College Saturday night.



Wilson improves to 3-19 overall, 2-18 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action, while Morrisville State drops to 5-17 overall, 5-14 in conference play.



Wilson opened the game with a 10-0 run over the first seven minutes of the contest before Morrisville State's Keyla Arce (Bronx, NY) was able to break the scoring drought with two free throws to put the Mustangs on the board.



Wilson increased their lead to 13 with 9:25 to go before Morrisville State went on a 10-0 run to get back in the game, fueled by two from behind the arc by LaQuiesha Jenkins (Syracuse, NY), but poor first half shooting led to a 29-21 Phoenix lead over the Mustangs at the break.



Morrisville State chipped away at the Wilson lead and took their first lead of the game on a three-pointer from Nijee Scott (Bronx, NY), but the lead was short lived as Whitfield went on a scoring streak, netting 11 straight in a minute and half to regain a six point advantage for the Phoenix.



Whitfield and Tara Fields (Berryville, VA) made key free throws down the stretch to secure the win for Wilson.



Fields netted 18 points for the Phoenix, adding six assists to her tallies while tallying three steals. Alaina Hofer (Duncannon, PA) contributed seven points and 15 rebounds in the win.



Three were in double figures for Morrisville State, including Nijah Townsend (Bronx, NY) with 14 points, 11 rebounds, while Arce added 12 points, six boards, and Scott 11 points and 10 rebounds, including six assists.

Morrisville State returns to the court tomorrow, hosting College of St. Elizabeth at 1 p.m. in the John W. Stewart Center for Student Activities (STUAC) gymnasium.
