Westfield State battles back to claim 17-15 victory over Morrisville State women

Visiting Westfield State University battled back from a three goal deficit at the break and out scored Morrisville State by five in the second half to claim the 17-15 non-conference victory Friday afternoon in Morrisville.



Westfield picked up their first win of the season (1-1), while the Mustangs dropped to 0-2.



Maura Stack (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the Owls with five goals and two assists while teammate Carly Keeley (Feeding Hills, Mass.) added four goals and an assist, including the game winner late in the second half. Hannah Joyce (Acton, Mass.) recorded the win between the pipes, saving 11.



Morrisville State was led by Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) with five goals and an assist, while Hillary Hartnett (Fairport, N.Y.) added four. Jamie Anderson (Harpursville, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist. Danielle Puzio (Holbrook, N.Y.) turned away 10 in the loss in net for the Mustangs.



Both teams battled back and fourth throughout the first half until Morrisville State posted three straight tallies at the end of the period to take the 13-10 lead into the break.



In the second, Westfield notched five straight scores to claim the two goal advantage just 10 minutes into the final frame, before Wood and Hartnett each tallied one to notch the game at 15 with just over 17 minutes remaining.



Keeley broke the draw with 4:44 to go, converting a Morrisville State turnover in their offensive end into a fast break score for the Westfield lead, and 35 seconds later, found Stack for the two goal advantage and eventual win.



Westfield out shot Morrisville State 36-29 and held the advantage in ground balls by a slim 25-23 margin.



Morrisville State returns to the field tomorrow, hosting Alfred University at 3 p.m. on Drake Field.
