MORRISVILLE, NY—A Morrisville State College student recently diagnosed with a suspected case of mumps has been removed from isolation and is no longer considered contagious. Initial lab results are negative for any presence of mumps. The diagnosis remains a suspected case only, pending additional results.
The student arrived at the Matthias Student Health Center last Wednesday, Dec. 6, and was diagnosed with a suspected case of mumps. Per state health regulations, the student was in isolation and remained there until Sunday, Dec. 10.
The student previously had received a measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination and booster. New York State requires that anyone taking more than six credit hours at a SUNY institution provide vaccination records or receive an exclusion for religious or medical reasons.
According to a 2016 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report, approximately 64 percent of mumps cases in college students occur in individuals who previously had received MMR vaccinations and boosters.
The college is following CDC and state regulations and recommendations and will continue to do so. The Student Health Center has provided information regarding the signs and symptoms of mumps, the infectious and incubation period of mumps and what to do if concerns over possible mumps happens while home during break, all of which can be found here: http://morrisville.edu/www/health_center/mumps.aspx.
Anyone with additional questions or concerns can contact the Student Health Center at 315.684.6078 or visit, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., at their location between the John W. Stewart Center for Student Activities (STUAC) and the automotive building.
College administrators advise students to continue attending classes and living in their residence halls. Those with specific concerns can speak with residence hall advisers and academic advisers, or contact the deans’ offices in Student Life and their respective schools.
