SUNY Morrisville faculty and staff honored by SUNY Chancellor

MORRISVILLE, NY — Four SUNY Morrisville faculty and staff members were recently honored with Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence by the State University of New York and SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr.  

Receiving the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is: 
Julanne Burton, of Earlville, associate professor of social science and coordinator of the SUNY Morrisville Human Services Institute

The SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes professors who show outstanding skill in the classroom, scholarship and professional growth, commitment to students and high academic standards.

Burton has been a member of the faculty at the SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus since 2015. Throughout her tenure, she has served in many leadership positions, including coordinator of the Human Services Program, as well as founder and coordinator of the SUNY Morrisville Human Services Institute and Norwich Campus Wellness Center.

She wrote the college’s first bachelor of professional studies degree in human services leadership, designed to educate students for careers in human services leadership, prepare them for graduate studies in social work or business administration or help them to create their own social entrepreneurial enterprises.  

Burton has been instrumental in developing and growing many human services programs and microcredentials, creating many applied learning opportunities for students, while also presenting at conferences and writing proposals and securing grant funding to enhance student experiences and opportunities.

Involved in numerous campus activities and serving on multiple committees, she also shares her commitment in various roles within her community. 
Burton holds a B.S. in journalism and an M.A. in child and family studies from Syracuse University and a M.S.W. and Ph.D. in social welfare from SUNY Albany.

Receiving the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service is:
Richard Marcoux, of New Hartford, professor of computer & information technologies

The SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service recognizes faculty members for excellence in teaching techniques, scholarship and professional growth, student services and academic standards.

Marcoux, who began his service at SUNY Morrisville in 2006, designed and developed the Bachelor of Technology degree in game programming, also creating several courses. He has served as the organizer/chair of the SUNY Morrisville Global Game Jam site since 2010.  

A member of various professional/academic affiliations, including The International Game Developers Association, Marcoux served in the United States Navy and was a programming team leader with the United States Army Information Systems Engineering Command.  

Through his work he has also secured grant proposals, participated in several conferences and has two professional publications: A Predictive Model to Test Icons for a Global Audience; and Book Review With Sylvia Payne of Oxford English for Information Technology.

Marcoux holds a B.S. degree in computer science from American University, an M.S. degree in software development & management from Rochester Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in computer information systems from Nova Southeastern University. He also has a graduate certificate in serious game design & research from Michigan State University.  

Receiving the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service is:
Brandy Thurston, of Sherrill, associate athletic director for compliance & sports information and senior woman administrator

The SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service recognizes outstanding job performance by professional staff in administrative positions and those who have transcended the normal definitions of excellence.

Thurston joined the Morrisville staff in 2001. Throughout her tenure, she has made significant contributions to both the athletics department and greater campus, serving in various capacities for many professional associations and as a representative for campus committees.

Among her accomplishments is developing and implementing an effective compliance model for the Athletics Department.

A board member of the Children’s Center at SUNY Morrisville, her community engagement goes beyond the campus as a member of the SUNYAC Governing Body, a member of the Boy Scouts of America Leatherstocking Council Board of Directors, Powderhorn District Committee and as an assistant Scoutmaster with a local Scouting unit.

Thurston earned an associate degree in chemistry from SUNY Morrisville, a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Le Moyne College and a master’s degree in sports management from SUNY Cortland.  

Receiving the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service is: 
Susan Parkhurst, of Morrisville, Administrative Assistant in the School of Agriculture, Business & Technology

The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service recognizes employees who have consistently demonstrated superlative performance within and beyond their position.  

Parkhurst got her start at SUNY Morrisville in the Registrar’s Office in 2001, before moving to the former School of Agriculture, where she has played an instrumental role in assisting students and faculty. She also served on search committees for new faculty.  

Parkhurst, who attended SUNY Morrisville, is a board member of the Children’s Center at SUNY Morrisville and is involved with the Morrisville Eaton Sports Boosters.
