BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women’s soccer team defeated the Mustangs of Morrisville St., 2-0, on Thursday afternoon.  The Mountaineers had goals scored by junior Kaitlyn Forant (Hardwick, Vt.) and senior Shawnee Webster (Hoosick, N.Y.).

The match started off slowly with Southern Vermont controlling the tempo. From the first whistle, the Mountaineers seemed to maintain offensive control, moving the ball well and getting good looks at the goal. However, SVC’s missed opportunities seemed to be the order of the first half with plenty of shots being taken, only to find themselves in a 0-0 game at the break.

The Mountaineers broke through early in the second half when Forant sped past the Mustang defenders to score the first goal of the game, unassisted. The goal was Forant’s eleventh of the season. The game stood at 1-0 for another twenty-minute span until Webster received a pass from Jess Magee (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and found the back of the net for the fifth time this season, giving the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead.

The two-goal advantage proved to be enough behind the goal keeping of Catrina Cecchini (Montville, Conn.) who saved the two shots that found their way to her.  It was her fourth shutout of the season.  Mustang goalie Jennifer Zidzik (Lambertville, N.J.) made six saves on the day, including three at point-blank range to prevent the game from opening up.

The Mountaineers return to New England Collegiate Conference action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they visit Elms College.  The Mustangs resume North Eastern Athletic Conference play with a 1 p.m. match at home next Saturday, October 6, when they host Penn State Berks.
