The Morrisville State College athletics department has named freshman Kylie Murphy (Nichols, N.Y.) and sophomore Gilroy Alvarez (Guatemala) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 7.
Murphy, freshman outside hitter for the women’s volleyball team, completed the week with 30 kills, 10 service aces and 57 defensive digs to lead the Mustangs.
In five matches on the week, she averaged 6.0 kills, 2.0 service aces and 11.4 defensive digs per match. Murphy posted a week high nine kills in the win over Wells, adding four service aces.
The graduate of Tioga Central High is majoring in business administration at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Gail and Patrick Murphy of Nichols, N.Y.
Alvarez, sophomore midfielder for the men’s soccer team, was instrumental to a 3-0 week for the Mustangs netting two goals and an assist.
Against Penn State Berks, Alvarez posted the game winning goal as Morrisville State dominated the Nittany Lions in the 3-0 victory.
He followed with an assist against top conference ranked and undefeated Penn State Abington, shining on defense as he shut down the Nittany Lions top midfielder, assisting the Mustangs to the 3-0 victory.
Majoring in individual studies at Morrisville State, Alvarez is the son of Edna Castillo of Guatemala.
