The Morrisville State College women's softball team improved to 3-1 overall on the season following a double header sweep of SUNY Cobleskill Saturday at the Field of Dreams Sports Complex in Schuyler by final scores of 11-1 and 15-7.
The losses drop the Fighting Tigers to 1-3 on the season.
In the first of the day's action, Cobleskill took a 1-0 lead after one inning before Morrisville State rallied in the top of the third for two runs behind singles from both Kayla Walker (Oneida, N.Y.) and Cassandra Smith (Lansing, N.Y.).
The following inning, the Mustangs posted four additional runs for the 6-1 lead, three unearned on an error at first base.
Morrisville State kept the bats rolling and put the game away in the fifth and sixth innings, crossing home plate five additional times to collect the 11-1 win.
Walker and Samantha Porter (Newfield, N.Y.) led the Mustangs at the plate, each going 3-for-4, while Porter added two runs. Monique Smith (Bronx, N.Y.) was 2-for-5, adding two runs, while recording three RBI's.
Jenna D'Ercole (Highland, N.Y.) threw for six innings in the win for Morrisville State, allowing four hits while striking out two.
Morrisville State had the bats rolling in the second, recording 20 hits in the 15-7 victory.
Cobleskill took the 2-0 lead after one, but Morrisville State responded in the top of the second with three runs to claim the lead, capitalizing on a wild pitch for two runs and an RBI single from Smith.
Leading 4-2 after three innings, the Mustangs broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning, crossing home plate five times and adding four more the following frame, including a two-run homer from Maranda Owens (Brookfield, N.Y.), for the commanding 13-4 lead after five innings.
Walker went 4-for-5 from the plate and scored twice, while Owens went 3-for-4 for three runs and two RBI's.
D'Ercole picked up her third win of the season, throwing six innings and allowing 12 hits. She also posted four strikeouts in the three-earned run contest.
Morrisville State returns to the field March 27, hosting Cazenovia at 3 p.m.
