Morrisville State women stun Cobleskill, post upset 57-49 conference win over Fighting Tigers

Morrisville State College women's basketball outscored visiting SUNY Cobleskill 14-6 in the extra period to post the 57-49 upset North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory over the Fighting Tigers Tuesday night in Morrisville.



Morrisville State improves to 4-10 overall, 3-4 in conference action, while Cobleskill drops to 8-6, 5-2 in NEAC play.



Nijah Townsend (Bronx, N.Y.) paced Morrisville State with 18 points, hitting 8-of-10 from the free throw line, collecting 15 rebounds, while Nijee Scott (Bronx, N.Y.) came off the bench to add 13 points, 10 rebounds, compiling four steals and assisting three. Jennel Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounded out top scoring for Morrisville State with 11 points, four rebounds.



Heidi Anderson (Canajoharie, N.Y.) led all scorers with 22 points, including five three-pointers for Cobleskill, while Victoria Carter (Monticello, N.Y.) added 11. Chelcy Moore (Albany, N.Y.) grabbed a game high 17 rebounds and dished out five assists, while posting two blocks.



Cobleskill struggled from the floor in the first half, hitting just 5-of-25 shots, as Morrisville State posted the 27-17 lead at the break.



Late in the second half, the Fighting Tigers went on a 12-3 run take the one point lead with less than a minute to go, but Scott converted the second of two free throws to tie the contest for the fifth time and force the overtime period.



In the extra period, Morrisville State jumped out to a quick two point lead on a lay-up from Dyshea Smiley (Harlem, N.Y.) and increased the lead to four with two free throws by Townsend, before Cobleskill inched to within two with a baseline jumper from Kady Porterfield (Macdoel, Calif.).



Following a three point play by Townsend with just over one minute remaining on the clock for the 54-45 lead, Morrisville State converted 3-of-4 free throws in the closing minute to pull off the upset.



Morrisville State returns to the court Saturday at Penn State Berks, while Cobleskill is on the road at Penn State Harrisburg.
