The Morrisville State College women’s lacrosse team stumbled Friday afternoon, dropping a 19-12 non-conference decision to host SUNY Canton in Canton.
The loss drops the Mustangs to 1-4 overall, while Canton improves to 4-3.
Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) and Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario) each posted four goals to lead the Morrisville State efforts, while Megan Carlin (Pawling, N.Y.) added three tallies, and Kolleen Brown (Willet, N.Y.) one.
Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) recorded the loss in net, registering six saves in nearly 44 minutes of play, before being relieved by Veronique Krohn (Amsterdam, N.Y.) for the final 16. Krohn posted two saves.
Tressa Goolden led Canton with seven goals and two assists while Keeley Rice added another six scores, and assisted two.
Alyssa Altschuler turned away nine to post the victory between the pipes, six in the first period.
Morrisville State jumped out to a 3-1 lead 10 minutes in, but Canton responded with seven straight tallies to claim an 8-3 advantage with 10:03 to go in the opening period.
Edmondson made it a four goal game, but the Roos fired off two additional tallies for the six goal advantage, and added another seconds before the close of the half, holding an 11-6 margin at the break.
In the second, Canton outscored Morrisville State 4-1 in the opening 10 minutes, and added three straight later on in the period to hold the 19-9 advantage with 8:20 showing on the clock.
The Mustangs posted three consecutive scores in less than a minutes time to get back in the contest, but were held scoreless for the remaining 6:13 as Canton collected the win.
Morrisville State out shot the Roos 34-29 and recorded a 20-13 advantage in draw controls on the day, but were edged in the ground ball game 25-21.
The Mustangs return to the field tomorrow, traveling to Potsdam for a 12 p.m. start against the Bears in non-conference play.
