The Morrisville State College women’s basketball team resumed schedule play with a 69-58 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) loss to host College of St. Elizabeth in Morristown, New Jersey Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs continue to look for their first win, dropping to 0-9 overall, 0-2 in conference play, while the Screaming Eagles improve to 4-5, 2-1 in the NEAC.
Queen Holquin (Bronx, N.Y.) and Jennel Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) combined for 34 points to lead the Morrisville State efforts, each posting 17, while Paul added 15 rebounds for the double-double performance. Holquin nailed five of her shots from long range, and added four assists and four steals to her tallies on the day.
Three tallied double digits for St. Elizabeth including Ashley Pledger who posted a high 27, dishing out four assists and also posting three steals. Kelly O’Dell contributed 20 points, controlling the boards for the Eagles with 14. Cheyenne Grant rounded out top scoring with 12.
Morrisville State shot just 22 percent from the floor in the first half as St. Elizabeth held a 30-23 advantage at the break, before battling back to tie the game at 52 with 5:20 remaining on the clock.
The Eagles quickly regained the lead with a jumper from O’Dell in the paint, before extending the advantage to four with a layup from Pledger with 4:36 to go.
Four Mustang turnovers led to St. Elizabeth extending their lead to nine with just over two minutes remaining before the Eagles closed out the victory with free throws down the stretch.
Morrisville State returns to the court tomorrow at Penn State Abington at noon.
