The Morrisville State College softball team swept Wells College in double header action Thursday afternoon in Aurora, topping the express 14-2 in game one (five innings) and edging a comeback attempt, 16-14, in game two.
Morrisville State improves to 13-13 overall, 10-4 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action, while Wells dropped to 1-17 overall, 1-13 in NEAC play.
Kayla Walker (Oneida, NY) had the live bat in the first game for the Mustangs, hitting 3-for-4 from the plate, scoring a run and recording a collegiate best nine RBI's. In the first inning, Walker hit a double that drove in two, and followed with a grand slam in the top of the second inning, giving Morrisville State the 7-0 advantage over the Express. In the top of the fourth, Walker hit her second double, driving in three, as the Mustangs posted a 14 run lead and eventual 14-2 victory.
Jenna D'Ercole (Highland, NY) recorded the win on the mound, throwing five innings and tallying seven strike outs in 20 batters.
In the night cap, Morrisville State trailed 2-0 before Jessica Rigg (Homer, NY) posted a three run homer in the top of the third, giving Morrisville their first lead of the game. Cassandra Smith (Lansing, NY) followed suit with a three run homer in the top of the fourth, extending the Mustang lead to 9-2.
Morrisville State added six additional runs in the seventh for a commanding 16-3 lead, and held off a Wells comeback attempt as the Express compiled 11 runs on 11 hits in the bottom of the inning for a 16-14 final.
Rigg led the Mustangs from the plate, hitting a perfect 3-for-3, tallying three RBI's and two runs, while Smith was 1-for-5 with one run and three RBI's.
Sara Croop (Whitney Point, NY) went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI, while Paige Jerrett (Parish, NY) added three RBI's on two hits.
D'Ercole recorded the win, throwing seven innings and allowing 13 earned runs, while striking out seven.
Morrisville State returns to the field tomorrow, traveling to Cazenovia for a double header at 4 p.m.
