Visiting SUNY Cobleskill battled back from a 12 point halftime deficit to threaten Morrisville State's unblemished record, but the Mustangs were able to pull out the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory by a narrow 81-80 margin Tuesday evening in Morrisville.
Morrisville State improved to 8-6 overall with the win, remaining unbeaten in conference play with a 5-0 record, while Cobleskill dropped to 1-14 overall, 1-4 in NEAC action.
Cobleskill's Brendan Doherty (Binghamton, N.Y.) led all scorers with 28 points on the night, hitting 10-of-14 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, while adding five rebounds and a team high six assists. Alexis Nunez (White Plains, N.Y) contributed 21 points, converting a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line, while tallying five rebounds and four assists. Clint Foster (Candor, N.Y.) added 15 points on five from downtown, while Tarik Payton (Amityville, N.Y.) posted 12.
Five netted double figures for the Mustangs, including Mickey Davis (Jamesville, N.Y.) who posted 20 points, nine rebounds and dished out four assists. Kucjok Ater (Syracuse, N.Y.) added 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Brandon Henry (Harlem, N.Y.) added 14 points. Brandon Hanks (Syracuse, N.Y.) put in 13 points and tallied five rebounds, while assisting a team high seven, adding four steals. Andrew Lucio (Solvay, N.Y.) rounded out top scoring with 10.
Morrisville State posted a 16 point advantage with just over 14 minutes to go in the second half, before Cobleskill began draining three's to cut the Mustang advantage to just two with 6:31 remaining.
With the lead changing twice over the next five minutes, Nunez put Cobleskill up by one with 1:29 remaining on the clock, but Davis converted a layup on the opposite end to regain the 81-80 advantage for Morrisville State with under 30 seconds to go. A last shot attempt by Payton at the buzzer fell short for Cobleskill as the Mustangs escaped with the win.
Cobleskill hit an astonishing 18-for-28 from the floor in the second half, including hitting 5-of-9 from behind the arc, holding the shooting advantage over the Mustangs 51 percent to 43 for the contest. The Fighting Tigers recorded 10 total tre's on the night.
Morrisville State returns to the court Saturday, traveling to Penn State Berks.
Cobleskill is on the road at Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday.
