Juniors Mickey Davis (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Jordan Prior (Cortland, N.Y.) combined for 33 points Wednesday night to lead host Morrisville State College men’s basketball past visiting Wells College by a 77-65 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) final in Morrisville.
The Mustangs improve to 16-5 overall, 10-2 in conference play, while the Express drop to 9-13, 5-7 in the NEAC.
Four posted double digits for Morrisville State, led by Davis who registered 17 points on the night, nailing three from long range, and snagging a team high six. Prior, who drained 4-of-5 from long range, posted 16 points, adding five rebounds and two assists to his tallies. Rhamel Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) collected 13 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Brandon Hanks (Syracuse, N.Y.) rounded out top scoring with 11, assisting four.
Jonathan Hurtado (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 22 to lead Wells with teammate EJ Taylor (Tampa Bay, Fla.) adding 19, hitting five from downtown. Al Paul (Elmont, N.Y.) rounded out top scoring with 10. Jonathan Bonds (Chicago, Ill.) collected 14 rebounds in the efforts, including five on the offensive glass.
Both teams played back and forth through the first four minutes of the contest before Davis and Prior hit back-to-back tre’s in a 29 second span to give the Mustangs a six point advantage, spurring a 16-4 run that increased the margin to 18.
Morrisville State held the 47-31 lead at intermission and opened the second half with an 8-0 run to build up a 24 point lead, before the Express began to chip away, cutting it to 11 with just seven minutes to go.
Jailaan Kinsey (Syracuse, N.Y.) hit back-to-back buckets for the Mustangs as they regained a 17 point advantage, a deficit that was too much to overcome as Morrisville State collected the win.
Both teams shot nearly even from the floor, the difference proved to be magic from beyond the arc as Morrisville State hit 12-of-21 three’s to Wells’ six on the night.
Morrisville State returns to the court Saturday, traveling to local rival Cazenovia.
