The Morrisville State College men's ice hockey team opened the 2010-2011 season with a 9-2 loss to Elmira College Friday night in Elmira.
Elmira opened up the contest with three scores in the first two minutes, twenty-three seconds, and added a fourth nine minutes in, for the commanding 4-0 lead after a single period.
Geoff Matzel (Chittenango, NY) put Morrisville State on the board 1:44 into the second period, but Elmira responded with their fifth of the night at 5:14. Bobby Cass (Burlington, ONT) brought the Mustangs to within three with a goal 7:30 in, but again the Soaring Eagles answered with another score to maintain the commanding four goal advantage.
Elmira posted three additional scores in the final period to claim the 9-2 non-conference victory.
Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC) recorded the loss between the pipes, saving two in 2:23 of play before being relieved by Colin Breen (Waterloo, ONT) for the next 50 minutes. Breen tallied 45 saves in this first collegiate appearance in the Mustangs defensive efforts. Dave Labaff (Potsdam, NY) posted four saves in the final seven minutes of the contest.
Morrisville State returns to the ice Friday, November 5th, hosting State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival SUNY Brockport at 7 p.m. in the Morrisville State IcePlex.
