Morrisville State College men's ice hockey posted a decisive 8-2 victory over rival SUNY Brockport for its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win of the 2010-11 season Friday night in Morrisville.
Playing to a scoreless first period, Morrisville State's Dave Shultz (Trucksville, PA) posted the first Mustang goal just 5:06 into the second off a breakaway on a mishandle of the puck by the Brockport defense. The Golden Eagles evened the score nearly two minutes later on a feed in front of the net to Dan Galiani at 6:45.
Jamie Nelson (Stratford, ONT) regained the one goal advantage for the Mustangs at 10:37, before a Brockport penalty resulted in a Derek Matheson (Durham, ONT) score just 15 seconds later for the 3-1 Morrisville State lead.
In the third, Shultz ignited the Morrisville State scoring with the first of five scores in the period. Nelson crossed the puck to Shultz who had an open net for the one timer just 2:41 in.
At 5:03 Curtis Renaud (Carlisle, ONT) posted one on the board, netting the breakaway up the center of the ice from Matheson. Tom Longland (Dunnville, ONT) netted the second power play score of the night for the Mustangs at 9:26 and Nelson added his second of the night just 39 seconds later.
James Cody added a final Golden Eagle score with a two-man advantage at 16:23 for Brockport before Rob Sgarbossa (Campbellville, ONT) posted the eighth Morrisville State tally with less than two minutes remaining on the clock.
Nelson and Shultz led Morrisville State with two goals, assisting one a piece, as Matheson and Longland posted one score and an assist each.
Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC) posted 32 saves in net for the Mustangs to collect the win as Morrisville State improves to 1-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 in SUNYAC action.
Oliver Wren made 31 stops between the pipes in the loss for Brockport in 45:41 before being relieved by Joe Reagan for the final 14:19. Reagan tallied eight saves as the Golden Eagles drop to 0-4-0 overall, 0-3-0 in SUNYAC play.
Morrisville State returns to the ice tomorrow night, hosting SUNY Geneseo at 7 p.m.
