The Morrisville State College football team rallied for a second half comeback attempt, but fell short, suffering a 14-11 non-conference loss to visiting Hartwick College Saturday night in Morrisville in the 2011 season opener.
The Mustangs put together an early 68-yard scoring drive with 11:38 remaining in the fourth to pull to within three, but failed to capitalize on additional opportunities as Hartwick held on for the win.
Anthony Casimano (Gansevoort, NY) led the Hawks on the ground with 152-yards on 28 carries, including a score in the first quarter that capped off a seven play, 80-yard drive with a 10-yard run with 5:33 to go.
Dan Brainard (Owego, NY) went 8-for-19 for 127 yards and a passing score, hitting Jordan Wilkins (Portsmouth, NH) midway through the third quarter for the 14-5 Hawk advantage. Wilkins finished the game with three receptions for 68-yards.
Jordan Spirou (Westbury, NY) led the defensive unit with 21 total tackles, including two sacks for a loss of 27 yards. RJ Roth (New Windsor, NY) contributed 11.
TJ McLaughlin (Troy, NY) led the Mustangs running and passing game, carrying the ball five times for 46 net yards, and completing 5-of-9 passes for 85 yards and a score. Starting quarterback, Lemar Johnson (Ossining, NY) went 8-for-15 for 88 yards.
Josh Powell (Yonkers, NY) led the receiving unit with four catches for 83-yards and a score, including the 33-yard scoring reception early in the fourth quarter.
Anthony Brown (Rochester, NY) had 11 total tackles for the Mustangs, forcing a fumble, while teammate Enrique Robinson (St. Paul, MN) added nine.
Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, September 17, hosting Montclair State at noon on Drake Field.
