Morrisville State dairy judging team takes home honors

Morrisville State's dairy judging team recently took home honors from the 46th annual Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held during the 2014 All-American Dairy Show, in Harrisburg, Pa.

The contest included dairy cattle evaluation and the delivery of oral reasons in defense of those evaluations. Awards were given to individuals and teams in each division for oral reasons, breed-specific results and overall results.

The Morrisville State dairy judging team won the contest's Junior College division, and took first place in the reasons component, overall results (judging and reasons), as well as in the Brown Swiss, Holstein, and Jersey breeds.



The following second-year dairy science students were individual winners:

Drew Hill, of Cattaraugus, second in the individual results for All Breeds

Evan Castrogiovanni, of Montrose, Pa., third in the individual for All Breeds

Logan Martin, of Salamanca, fourth in the individual for All Breeds



Morrisville State's Dairy Judging Team is comprised of Hill, Castrogiovanni, Martin, Alton Rudgers, of Attica, and Eric Shelmidine, of Adams, (alternate).



The team is led by Matthew Bruno, assistant professor of dairy science. Also playing a vital role in the judging team's training are: Chris Smithgall, a Morrisville State alumnus and dairy farmer in Western; Jenny Mills, associate consultant-dairy marketing at Elanco Animal Health, Canada; and Doug Waterman, director of dairy technology application at Shur-Gain.
