Morrisville State College yearling sale draws crowd

MORRISVILLE, NY—Robbie Robinson waited patiently as bidders started nodding and raising their hands over a sleek bay colt standing in the sale ring. 



“I took my time and then when it was right, I made that one bid.”



And with that, Rockstar Rebel was his. The yearling went for $26,000 during Morrisville State College’s Annual Fall Yearling Sale.



This year’s highly anticipated sale once again drew a crowd of potential buyers, sellers, trainers and owners from across the Northeast and Canada. MSC’s sale is the only one of its kind in New York State held on a college campus. 



A total of 72 yearlings grossed $967,700 for an average of $13,440. The highest-priced yearling topped out at $35,000, consigned by Lakeview Equine. 



The yearling sale, which features year-old Standardbred horses sold on consignment by the college, is organized and run by Morrisville State Equine Department faculty, staff and students.



“It is a well-run sale,” said Robinson, who traveled from Ottawa, Canada, for the event. “Even if I don’t buy, I love to come to this sale.” 



Robinson spotted Rockstar Rebel during a preview held the day before the sale.



“I looked at his confirmation and liked what I saw. He is a horse that looked the part,” said Robinson, who plans to train and race his new horse in New York. “I have high hopes for him.” 



Students also had hopes for yearlings in the sale, some of which they helped foal and raise. 



Kasey Mang, of Fort Plain, was preparing Hot Seat for the show ring. “He is special. He was my project yearling,” said the equine student who foaled the bay colt along with his half-sister.



Equine students participated in every aspect of the sale, from administrative duties to horse handling and showing horses in the sales ring. 



The sale is an all-around great experience for students, allowing them to learn in a real-life business setting.
