Morrisville State College will hold 23rd annual yearling sale Sept. 24

The Morrisville College Equine Institute will hold its twenty-third annual Fall Yearling Sale Sept. 24 at 11 a.m. at the college's Nancy Sears Stowell Arena on Swamp Road. The preview day for the sale, the largest of its kind in New York state, is Sept. 23.



A total of 172 yearlings are up for sale. Sixteen of them are being sold by the Morrisville Equine Institute: two yearlings of Conway Hall; three yearlings of Cash Hall; two yearlings of RC Royalty; six yearlings of Kenneth J; one yearling each of American Ideal, Big Apple Deli and Mister Big.



Conway Hall (9 total yearlings in the sale) and Cash Hall (21 total yearlings in the sale) are second and third, respectively, among the leading money-winning trotting stallions in the NYSS. They both also rank among the national leaders, both on an absolute and average, per foal, basis.



RC Royalty (8 total yearlings in the sale) became the fastest 2-year-old trotting colt ever in the NYSS on a half-mile track by virtue of his 1:58.2 score at Saratoga Gaming and Raceway in 2005. That track record, along with the 1:59.4 record he set at Monticello Raceway in the same year, still stand today. RC Royalty also holds the Massachusetts Sire Stake record for 3-year-old trotting colts of 1:59.4.



Kenneth J, who has $1.5 million in earnings, is the fastest son of Bettor's Delight and has set records at five different raceways during his career. He was a two time NYSS Champion, Empire Breeders Classic Champion, and won Red Mile stakes at both 2 and 3. Kenneth J has 15 total yearlings in the sale.



As a 2-year-old, royally bred Big Apple Deli (8 total yearlings in the sale), a son of Conway Hall, made six starts, winning three, all New York Sire Stakes events including his final rookie outing at Tioga, which he won by more than 13 lengths.



At three he competed with the elite of his division, winning several NYSS tests. He finished second by less than a length in an elimination of the Yonkers Trot and a very close third in the final. In a Hambletonian elimination he finished third behind the great Deweycheatumnhowe.



In total he made 23 career starts with nine wins and $312,000 in earnings. His record was 1:55.3 but he was consistently timed in 1:54 or better during his sophomore season.



Conway Hall, Cash Hall, RC Royalty and Kenneth J all stand stud at Morrisville State College.



The yearling sale, which features year-old Standardbred horses sold on consignment by the college, is organized and run by Morrisville State College Equine Department faculty, staff and students.



Equine students will be working the event, participating in every aspect of it from bedding stalls, grooming, leading and showing horses, to setting up the business office and assisting with cleanup.



Last year, the sale grossed nearly $1.8 million.



Profits from the sale go toward general maintenance and enrichment of the college's equine programs. There is no admission charge and the public is welcome to attend.

Morrisville State College offers a bachelor of technology degree in equine science and two associate degrees in equine racing management and equine science and management. The diverse equine science curriculum includes specializations in breeding, western, hunt seat, draft/driving, thoroughbred racing, standardbred racing, business, and equine rehabilitation therapy.



An Equine Breeding and Training Center, a 34,000 square-foot breeding and hunter/jumper facility, includes a breeding and foaling barn, hunter/jumper barn, stallion barn, a complete breeding laboratory, collection area, laptop classroom, three indoor riding arenas. There is also a new state-of-the-art equine rehabilitation center.



In addition to the Equine Breeding and Training Center, the college has an 80-acre Equine Center complete with paddocks, stables, and the only half-mile harness racing track on a college campus in the nation. Additional stables include a draft horse barn with a covered round pen and runouts.
