Morrisville State College Students Receive Liberal Arts Awards

Morrisville State College liberal arts students were recently honored for their achievements during the 10th annual Liberal Arts Tea. The event is part of the college's annual celebration of academic excellence.



The Liberal Arts Theater Participant-of-the-Year Award, given to a student who excels in theater productions on campus or assisting with productions, was presented to Corey Tighe, of Patchogue, N.Y., a wood products technology major.



Tighe has been involved in the theater for two years as a carpenter, crew member, and also assisted with lighting. He designed the set for, and participated in the play, “The Robber Bridegroom,” and has also participated in “The Crucible,” “Oklahoma,” and “You Can't Take it With You.”



The Liberal Arts Tutor-of-the-Year Award, given to a student who excels as a peer tutor in the Academic Enrichment Center, was presented to Ashley Messer, of Clay, N.Y., a liberal arts and sciences: teacher education transfer – adolescent education major. Messer tutors English, history, psychology, and sociology.



Thomas Huber, of Bay Shore, N.Y., received the Liberal Arts Athlete-of-the-Year Award, presented to a student who is a role model in both athletics and academics. Huber played soccer and lacrosse and was named to the Dean's List. A liberal arts and sciences: teacher education transfer – adolescent education major, he also served as a student athletic representative for the Student Athletes' Association, an NCAA Divisional III organization. A ‘legacy student,' his father was a member of Morrisville's NJCAA national championship soccer team in 1980.



The recipient of the Criminal Justice Student-of-the-Year Award was Hyejung Kim, of Albany, N.Y., a criminal justice bachelor of technology degree major. Kim already holds bachelor and master's degrees from her native country, South Korea.



The Humanities Student-of-the-Year Award, presented to an outstanding liberal arts major, was awarded to Sonika Mathieson, of Brooklyn, N.Y., a liberal arts and sciences: humanities and social science major.



The Journalism Student-of-the-Year Award, given to the most outstanding student in a journalism program, was presented Jeff Costello, of Cazenovia, N.Y., a journalism and communication for online media bachelor degree major. Costello is managing editor of the CHIMES (college) newspaper and is a member of the Gamers' Guild, having served as president, vice-president, SGO representative, and treasurer. A member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for two-year college students, he has been invited to join Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Honor Society for baccalaureate students.



Named Science, Technology and Society Student-of-the-Year was Kerri Braun, of Oriskany Falls, N.Y. The award recognizes a science, technology and society student who excels academically and has made contributions to the program. Braun was also named to the college's Dean's List.



The Social Science Student-of-the-Year Award was presented to Christopher McCallops, of Morrisville, N.Y., a liberal arts and sciences: humanities and social science major.



Named Mary T. Brown Teacher Education Transfer Student-of-the-Year was April Winn, of Chittenango, N.Y., a liberal arts and sciences: teacher education transfer – adolescent education major.



Receiving the Liberal Arts Alumni Scholarship Award was Megan Chase, of Wampsville, N.Y., a liberal arts and sciences: teacher education transfer – early childhood education major. The award recognizes top performance in academics, extracurricular activities and overall service.
