Morrisville State College professor, Morrisville resident receives teaching award during national lecture tour

A Morrisville State College professor is among those who was recognized during the Alltech North American Lecture Tour.



Dr. Clyde Cranwell, of Morrisville, NY, assistant professor and director of Morrisville State College's thoroughbred racing program, received an agriculture educator award from Alltech during a symposium held in Syracuse, one of 23 stops in the Alltech North American Lecture Tour.



Alltech is a global leader in the animal health and nutrition industry and among the top 10 animal health companies in the world. Their tour this year focused on the latest technological developments which can move the agriculture industry forward.



Cranwell, who has been teaching at Morrisville State College since 2006, has been involved with agriculture all of his life.



The Nebraska native grew up on a horse farm where he learned about the horse racing industry from his parents who have been in the business for more than five decades, along with his grandfathers.



Throughout his teaching career, Cranwell has received numerous accolades. He was honored by the Collegiate FFA Chapter at Oklahoma Panhandle State University for teaching excellence, and also received the Holling Family Award for Teaching Excellence-Junior Faculty at the University of Nebraska.



A member of numerous national organizations including the Equine Science Society (ESS) and the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS), New York Thoroughbred Breeders Association, and the Nebraska Thoroughbred Breeders Association, he also serves on the Youth Livestock Committee for the Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, NY.



In addition to his commitment in the classroom, Cranwell is an avid volunteer at his church, Crouse Community Center in Morrisville, and 4-H. He is also an active member of the Morrisville-Eaton Central School PTO.



The author of numerous equine and agriculture-related publications, Cranwell was invited to speak at the Brazilian Congress of Animal Reproduction in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Additionally, he holds licenses issued by the Racing and Wagering Board (Racing Commission) in three states, has Trainer's Licenses in New York State and Pennsylvania, and an Owner's License in Nebraska.



MSC's bachelor of technology degree in equine science: equine racing (thoroughbred) management option, allows students to gain hands-on experience with conditioning horses, grooming, exercise riding and race preparation.



A unique feature of the program is a summer option where students can gain actual experience racing horses at the Finger Lakes Racetrack, in Farmington, NY, where the college has notched several wins. Their season typically begins in May.



Several MSC alums and race horses have earned notoriety throughout the years, including an alumnus who was the regular rider for a Kentucky Derby winner, a Belmont winner, and a Breeder's Cup Classic winner.



Prior to working at Morrisville State College, Cranwell was an associate professor at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Neb.



Cranwell earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Oklahoma Panhandle State University, a master's degree in animal science from the University of Wyoming and a doctoral degree in animal science from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.
