Morrisville State College to Host Educational Presentation By New York State Teacher of Year

Morrisville State College's Teacher Education Transfer Program will host a presentation by Debra Calvino, 2010 New York State Teacher of the Year, on April 2, as part of its Professor Mary T. Brown Lecture Series.



The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Room 105 in Crawford Hall.



Calvino, a high school math teacher at Valley Central High School in Montgomery, New York, will give a presentation, “Never Give Up! On Math, on Teaching, on Learning.”



Calvino, who has taught for 27 years, also serves as the chairperson/supervisor of the Valley Central High School Mathematics Department.



Known for using her math skills in different ways, she also serves as a master trainer in data analysis, fostering district-wide support for and use of data-driven instruction to improve student achievement. She has also enhanced district resources through her extensive grant writing and advocacy efforts.



A reception with refreshments will follow the discussion.



The event is sponsored by Morrisville State College's Teacher Education Transfer Program, Campus Activities Board (CAB), Shelia Johnson Foundation and the Learning Community Program.



Morrisville State College offers six associate degrees in teacher education transfer in three areas: early childhood, childhood, and adolescence education. The degree programs are intended for students who want to begin their academic preparation to become teachers in grades B-2, grades 1-6 or grades 7-12.



Morrisville's teacher education transfer degree is unique in that students have the opportunity to work in the field early in their academic careers, instead of waiting until their fourth year as is the typical experience in education course work.
