Morrisville State's annual Autumn Review Sale set a record with the highest numbers in the 32-year history of the event.

The dairy cattle sale focuses on Holsteins ranging in age from small calves to up to five- and six-year old animals.

The sale grossed a total of $279,640 with 86 live lots sold, two embryo lots, and one “Pick of the Herd” consignment. The live lots ranged from 3-months to 4-year-old cows with one two-week-old half lot. The average per live lot was $3,119 which is a record for the sale and reflective of the quality of the animals gathered by the students, according to Dr. Steve Mooney, co-advisor of the sale and assistant professor of dairy science at MSC. The high lot, $6,000, was consigned by Morrisville State animal science—dairy student, Erik Shelmidine, of Adams.

Run by Morrisville State's faculty and students in dairy and agricultural business classes, and the college's dairy club, proceeds from the sale support dairy club trips, the dairy judging team, academic programs, and various activities and events. More than 100 students participated in this year's event.

Shelmidine and Duncan Bailey, of Fillmore, an agricultural business development major, co-chaired the sale. Also assisting were: Jessica Currie, of Tully, a dairy science and agricultural business dual major; Drew Hill, of Cattaraugus, agricultural science major; Karch Manley, of Hamilton, agricultural business development student; Triston Peterson, of Kennedy, agricultural business development degree major; and Derek Mowers, of Bridgewater, dairy management student.

“There was an excellent presentation of the animals and the facilities by the students and the overall event was very successful,” Mooney said. “The students' hard work, skills and talents as a team made this a success.”

“The students did a fantastic job,” commented Dave Rama, sale auctioneer. “Many of them worked on getting bids, the cattle looked the part and I have to say, this is one of the finest jobs we have ever seen by students at any college sale.”

The Morrisville State Dairy Club helps students extend their knowledge of the dairy industry through participation in activities like the annual Autumn Review Sale and field trips.
