Learn about basic energy conservation in courses at Morrisville State College's Renewable Energy Training Center

Learn the basics when it comes to home heating and gain a better understanding of energy conservation during two energy sessions, Energy Conservation and Supply Options for Homes and Fundamentals of Energy Transfer for Renewable Energy Systems being held at Morrisville State College's Renewable Energy Training Center (RETC) in Shannon Hall.



Scholarships are available to offset costs. Full scholarships are being offered to the first 15 teachers, K-12, who register for the courses which cost $125 each.



Energy Conservation and Supply Options for Homes will be held Sept. 13 from 6-10 p.m. This workshop, for homeowners with little or no background in energy-related areas, will cover several simple tools for evaluating options in the areas of energy conservation and fuel choice. Discussions will include the basics of building heat loss, estimating heat cost, and making comparisons between fuel options.



Homeowners will learn how to interpret their utility bills and how to estimate annual heating costs using the degree-day method. They will also receive a “Kill-a-watt” meter for monitoring energy use of appliances.



Fundamentals of Energy Transfer for Renewable Energy Systems will be held Sept. 21, from 6-10 p.m.

This workshop, a primer for more detailed workshops on solar thermal and geothermal heat pump systems, condenses the fundamentals of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and electrical power into easily understood terms and presents several examples of how they apply to thermally and electrically based renewable energy systems.



Participants will learn about electrical power, measurements and calculations, in addition to basic heat transfer, conduction, convection, and radiation.



Both workshops will be presented by John Siegenthaler, P.E., a licensed professional engineer with more than 30 years of experience in designing hydronic systems.



Participants who successfully complete the courses will earn 3.5 PDH and .35 CEU.
