Fighting Tiger women cage Mustangs

The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team overcame a cold first half offensively to slug out a 48-36 win over visiting Morrisville State College in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action on Wednesday evening at the Iorio Gymnasium. The win moves the Fighting Tigers overall record to 4-9 on the year including a 3-4 mark in conference action while the Mustangs fall to 1-13 overall with a 1-6 record versus league opponents.

The Fighting Tiger’s trailed at the break 14-11 as the home team connected on only 4-of-36 shots from the field, 11.1%, in the stanza. However the second half saw the Orange & Black extend their defense and go on a furious 14-to-4 run from to take a 25-18 lead from which they never looked back.

The Cobleskill backcourt of senior point guard Alexis Hauser, Albany, N.Y., Albany High School, and senior guard/forward Heidi Anderson Canajoharie, N.Y., Canajoharie High School, led the way to victory for the home team. Hauser posted a double/double with 16 points and 10 rebounds along with four assists and three steals while Anderson scored 15 points to go with eight rebounds on the night. Sophomore forward Tracee Schiebel, Vernon, N.Y., Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School, chipped in a team high of 13 rebounds to go with eight points to secure the win.

The Mustangs were led by sophomore guard Jannel Paul, Brooklyn, N.Y., Paul Robeson High School, who netted 14 points and by sophomore forward Joslyn Paige, East Patchogue, N.Y., Bellport High school, who took down a game high of 15 rebounds in the contest. 

Cobleskill will next be in action on Saturday January 19th when the play host to the Nittany Lions of Penn State Harrisburg with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m. while the Mustangs travel to Canton N.Y. on Friday, January 18 to face SUNY Canton in non-league action beginning at 6:00 p.m.
