Senior forward Courtney Cartier (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) registered six points on a goal and four assists to lead visiting St. Lawrence University field hockey to a 5-1 victory over host Morrisville State College Saturday afternoon in Morrisville.
The win lifts the Saints to 3-13 overall, while Morrisville State drops to 2-16.
Carly Stine (South Burlington, Vt.) tallied two scores for the Saints, while teammates Ashley Ferenczy (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Emma Berry (New Hampton, NH) each added one.
Rebecca Meyer (Morrisville, N.Y.) registered the lone goal for the Mustangs with Jamie Anderson (Harpursville, N.Y.) posting the assist. Nicole Gregg (Lisle, N.Y.) made 10 stops in the loss.
Morrisville State put pressure immediately on St. Lawrence keeper Nicole Matos (Greenwich, Conn.), but it was Ferenczy who posted the first tally of the day on the scoreboard, collecting the ball on a scramble in front of net and finding the back of the cage for the score just over 11 minutes in. Matos tallied seven saves in 44:38 of play.
Cartier added the second Saints goal at 30:11 on a reverse stick shot on the left post to give St. Lawrence the 2-0 lead, before Stine added her first of two with a sweep on the left post on a penalty corner feed as time expired.
Stine added another in the 44th minute in the second half, again netting the score with a tip on the left post from Cartier.
Morrisville State was finally able to sneak one past the Saints defense midway through the period, as Meyer fired the backhanded shot past goalkeeper Brady Cooper (Lakeville, Conn.) for the tally. Cooper registered two saves in 18:24, before being replaced by Kim Haab (Stowe, Vt.) who turned away two in the final 6:58.
Berry added a final Saints goal in the closing seconds of the contest for the 5-1 non-conference final.
St. Lawrence held the 37-27 advantage in shots, while Morrisville State edged the Saints in penalty corners 12-9.
Prior to the contest, Mustang seniors Anderson, Meyers, Sarah Angerer (Cooperstown, N.Y.) and Abby Muraco (Amherst, N.Y.) were honored.
Morrisville State returns to the field Tuesday, hosting St. John Fisher at 5 p.m. for the final contest of 2012.
