The Morrisville State College athletic department has named Gilroy Alvarez (Guatemala) and Tyler Dunworth (Poestenkill, N.Y.) it’s Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 1.
Alvarez, sophomore forward, led the Mustangs men’s soccer team to a third place finish at the SUNY Potsdam College Cup over the weekend, tallying a goal and an assist for three team points.
In the 3-2 loss against Potsdam in the opening round, Alvarez fueled the Mustangs comeback attempt by netting a score in the second half and following up with an assist on the second tally.
An individual studies major at Morrisville State, Alvarez was named to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) All-Conference team as a freshman. He is the son of Edna Castillo.
Dunworth, sophomore running back and punter for the Mustangs, was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Special Teams Player of the Week, after controlling field position for the Mustangs during the season opening 9-7 defeat to Wilkes University.
On the day he averaged 45.4 yards per punt on seven attempts, including a long punt of 65 yards. He also downed three of his punts inside the Wilkes 20-yard line.
The graduate of Averill Park High is majoring in liberal arts and sciences – humanities and social science at Morrisville State. He is the son of Diane and Jeff Dunworth of Averill Park.
