Morrisville State gets recycling grant

Morrisville State is one of several schools to receive funding from the first-ever College Council Grant Program conducted by the New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling (NYSAR3).



Due to Morrisville State's expanded campus recycling special events and efforts to teach students to recycle, they, along with the University of Albany, SUNY Cobleskill, Orange Community College, and Colgate University were awarded a total of $4,100 in grants. This was announced recently at NYSAR's fall recycling conference in Cooperstown.



Projects funded had to involve initiating, improving or expanding reduction, reuse, recycling and composition projects on college campuses.



Morrisville State has already taken some efforts including opening a new recycling room in Commons 1 residence hall on Oct. 23 for Campus Sustainability Day.



“We are hoping this will become standard across campus,” said Shannon Richard, executive director of campus operations for MAC. “The town is very concerned about recycling too and is hoping that any awareness we can offer will help educate off-campus students as well.”



Richard says she is hoping to develop a strategy for tackling recycling on campus and to offer suggestions to other campuses looking to start a recycling program.
