Visiting SUNY Geneseo field hockey posted five first half goals enroute to an 8-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over host Morrisville State College Wednesday afternoon in Morrisville.
The loss drops the Mustangs to 2-8 overall on the season and 0-4 in conference play, while the Knights improve to 4-3 overall, 2-0 in SUNYAC action.
Kayla DeAngelis (Liverpool, N.Y.) paced Geneseo with three tallies, assisting another, while teammate Margaret Gerardi (Glenville, N.Y.) added two scores. Rachel Atkins (Clarence, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist, while Sarah Malinak (Fairport, N.Y.) and Alyssa Jerge (Lancaster, N.Y.) registered one apiece.
Dayna Mercer (Katonah, N.Y.) made one stop in the first half of play, recording the win in net, before Caitlyn Dowell (Massapequa, N.Y.) posted two saves in the second half, allowing the lone Mustang score.
Ilze Stots (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) tallied the goal for the Mustangs, with Becky Meyer (Morrisville, N.Y.) earning the assist.
Ellen DePasquale (Vernon, N.Y.) recorded the loss, turning away six in the first half, before being relieved by Nicole Gregg (Lisle, N.Y.) who made 11 stops in the second period.
DeAngelis posted the first three scores for the Knights, notching the first just 6:55 in on a shot that landed inside the left post, before firing one into the back of the cage from the top of the circle minutes later. At the 11:56 mark, DeAngelis dodged through the defense and beat DePasquale for a 3-0 Geneseo lead, before assisting Atkins
in the 18th minute on a penalty corner play.
In the second, Geneseo posted three scores within seven minutes to hold a commanding 8-0 lead and kept the Mustangs off the scoreboard until 68:33 when Meyer found Stots for the tip past Dowell.
Geneseo out shot Morrisville 40-9 and held the 9-2 advantage in penalty corners on the afternoon.
Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, traveling to Vassar for a non-conference contest.
