Morrisville State students hone their skills at World Dairy Expo

Morrisville State’s dairy judging team competed in the World Dairy Expo held recently in Madison, Wis.



Team members placed individually in the top 10 of each breed for Holstein, Milking Shorthorns, Jersey, Red and White Holsteins, Guernseys, and Ayrshire, with Colleen Cargile, an animal science—dairy major from Skaneateles, taking first place individual for the Jersey breed.



The team placed in the top five for each breed for Holstein (fourth), Milking Shorthorns (third), Red and White Holsteins (fourth), Guernseys (fifth), Brown Swiss (fifth), and Ayrshires (third).



They also placed fourth overall for reasons, and placed fifth overall at the competition. Cargile ranked ninth in the top overall individual scores. A total of 13 teams competed in the division.



The team, led by Justine Deming, assistant professor of dairy science, is comprised of Nicole Achtyl, of Lawtons; Colleen Cargile, of Skaneateles; Brandon Perna, of Broadalbin; and Jessica Currie, of Tully. All of the students are animal science—dairy majors.



The team will compete again Nov. 10 at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky.
